DREAM AS VIGIL OF THE ANTHROPOCENE
Ruben Fuentes: painter, visual artist from Cuba born in the Far East. In his work the voluptuousness of the tropical lands of Matanzas merges with the subtlety of the mists that crisscross the Lu mountain. Sometimes a distant journey must be undertaken, towards the other, to understand that what we were looking for was within reach of our consciousness, it was just a question of knowing how to look. And Ruben´s vision embarks on an aesthetic journey that does not depart from a need to search in the other, but from a firm belief that borders are imaginary, that zen buddhism and Chan painting of the Song Dynasty, can become the inspiration of a Cuban painter trained in Valencia, who lives in Paris. Because Ruben´s understanding of sino-japanese painting is not based on a decadent exoticism, but on the sincere experience of one who has delved deeply into the way of life proposed by zen practices. Rubens´ visual proposals are born from a creative honesty, from the vital need every human being has to find their way of life and creative expression, within a framework that suits their spiritual characteristics. We are thus before an aesthetic phenomenon, a hybridization of languages which stem from a deep understanding of their sources of inspiration, which uses landscape as a means of expression and introspection in the labyrinth of a consciousness that becomes collective, because the concerns of the visual proposals in "The Dreams of the Shaman" are a reflection on the human impact on the environment, something which affects not only a group of isolated artists but all of humanity. And Ruben uses the language of ink wash painting, recovering beauty and excitement, traces of a dream-like reality that melts in mystery, for a social reflection on the landscape. The terrestrial animals which crack up in the pictorial landscapes of these works form part of the depths of a collective subconscious, they are the mud that lies in the recesses, the sharp corners of the endless bogs of consciousness. Thus come the echoes, bronze vibrations from the terrestrial masks of the Shang Yin, as if those Taotie masks were reincarnated again and leaked out of the Shamans´ dreams to reclaim their space, to stick the bronze axe of their mystery into us. Because in this symbolic landscape the aim is to conceive symbols, to penetrate those silhouettes born of emptiness, and every animal landscape, every landscape which is transformed by the shape of its inhabitants, is given form by the symbols regurgitated by their consciousness, remaining weightless, suspended in a fog that only fades when we look away. ... and the question remains, the eternal question which escapes response; mystery. … and it is these animal landscapes, these uprooted anemones, a feverish tree invasion that demands its space, and awakens us from the dream, making us aware of the disasters of the Anthropocene.
